PROJECT DETAILS:

working under the direction of thom long (of visionLab/ml-creative), my responsibility was to help transition the former website of watermark cambridge (flash-based, designed by thom long), into an accessible, cms-based website that could easily be managed and have potential for expansion at a later date. thom provided the incredible design, which made the job so much easier for me. the project took about 2 months (of real development work) and include features such as: custom slideshows + video player (flowplayer), google maps mashup w/ point of interest, and much more!

as a website for the official book by diane degroat + shelley rotner, i worked closely with the authors in determining exactly what it was they were looking for. from the initial meeting, i knew that they wanted the freedom to manage the website themselve, while still containing many of the features that are on the website now.

BUSY, BUSY, BUSY! THAT'S THE {phatform} WAY.

This year has been an incredibly busy year for myself. Surprisingly (and fortunately) graduate school hasn't been as stressing on my schedule as I thought, probably because I am not taking a real studio course this semester. I do spend just about every hour of my life outside of class inside the architecture studio at Smith College, which has really helped in providing a very effective work space, and fortunately there's usually good company in the form of other design-conscious students, despite the fact that their work is quite different.

A recap of recently causes for busy-ness (and business): launch of the ravamped RTE website (which still needs to be tweaked for optimization); a Koha installation for the Pawlet Public Library in Vermont (amazingly done in less than 3 days!) that totaled about 10hrs+ of driving; design/development for the new Design, Art + Technology (DART) Program for my alma mater Hampshire College is coming along steadily and will hopefully be set for an initial release in December.

But of course I somehow managed to squeeze this website into the mix. I've been wanting to redesign this website for such a long time now. Excuse any mistakes you might encounter for the time being. I can only do so much with so little time. Meanwhile, feel free to send me any comments you have!

what is {phatform}?

{phatform} is a product of sophat sam (me). i try to resist defining exactly what it is i do, but my work is generally referred to as front-end design + development. this means i make the things you see on a website work and look as it should.

the name {phatform} is a play on my own name (sophat), nothing more.

who is sophat?

i am a master of architecture student at umass amherst. i graduated from hampshire college in the spring of 2008, where my studies culminated in a senior thesis on german expressionist architecture in drawings and an urban reconstruction of the city of lowell, ma. you can view/play with some of my work from that year here.

i currently reside in northampton, ma where i currently hold the position of assistant in architecture at smith college for the past year. this means on any night you will most likely find me in the architecture studio. with what little "free" time i have away from school and work, you'll most likely find me reading about architectural theory, just because.

though i am of cambodian origin, i was born and raised in a red cross refugee camp in thailand until i was seven when my family (all nine of us!) came to the united states and have since settled as part of the large cambodian population of lowell, ma. i have been in cambodia once as a child (though i don't remember much/any of it).

how do you contact me?
